Windermere Basin

Located at the foot of Red Hill Creek, Windermere Basin was historically a wetland and mudflat. It provided habitat for fish and wildlife (including migratory birds) and help to slow and filter sediments coming from Red Hill Creek.

Over time, Windermere became degraded as a result of industrial contamination, and significant infilling occurred between the 1950’s and the 1990’s. The Hamilton Harbour Remedial Action Plan listed Windermere Basin as one of eight possible sites for fish and wildlife restoration in the industrial part of the Harbour. Windermere Basin was recently restored to an estuarine ecosystem with improved water quality. The restoration includes 10 hectares of terrestrial habitat and 13 hectares of wetland.
