During the early part of the 20th century, Hamilton Harbour experienced heavy traffic across its waters as passengers were ferried from Hamilton and Toronto to Wabasso Park (presently LaSalle Park) for a day of enjoyment. The SS Hamiltonian – one of the most well-known of the many passenger ferries – carried well-dressed day-trippers from the foot of James Street to the park and the Burlington Beach Strip for a summer retreat. Thousands of people sailed across the Harbour for a picnic, a swim or to enjoy the amusement park. The SS Hamiltonian ferried passengers from 1944 until it was destroyed by fire in 1952.
